“I can do better.” He surprisingly wasn’t angry at all, his tone gentle. “Give me five years. If after five years you still can’t like me, we’ll get a divorce. During these five years, I won’t restrict your freedom. You can do whatever you want, even have someone you like. If you ever fall for someone, just tell me, and I’ll let you go. But until then, be with me, okay?”
Thelma didn’t expect him to say this. He was such a strong-willed man; why was he yielding so much for her? Why was he putting himself in such a position?
Thelma felt a sense of anger at his lack of ambition. “You’d better not misunderstand. I’m not that kind of virtuous and obedient girl. On the contrary, I have a dark heart and a strong desire for revenge. I will repay anyone who hurts me, even if that person is your mother. So, if your mother bullies me, I won’t let her off easily. Who knows, I might even turn your whole family upside down. Do you still want a wife like me? Are you sure you can handle five years of this?”
He smiled nonchalantly. “Go ahead and make a scene, just don’t tire yourself out.”
He didn’t take it seriously at all; she felt like she was hitting a wall of cotton.
She angrily said, “Why are you like this? There are so many women in the world. Why can’t you find someone else? Why won’t you just divorce me?”
He chuckled softly, as if talking to himself. “So many women in the world…” He looked up, his gaze fixed on her, warmth rising in his eyes. “But what can I do? I only want you. So go ahead and make your fuss; I love you and will spoil you, that’s all that matters.”
Thelma: “……”
Thelma was stunned for a moment, then lowered her head, hiding the bitter smile at the corner of her mouth, “I don’t deserve this from you, I really don’t.”
“I know whether it’s worth it or not. You should rest well.”
After he finished speaking, he left the room. Thelma leaned weakly against the bed, it seemed that Sam Noah was determined not to divorce her. Five years… did she really have to stay by his side for another five years?
For a moment, Thelma didn’t know where to go or what to do.
The day after Sam Noah brought Tyler back, Thelma accidentally overheard a conversation between Sam Noah and Ruth at the stairway.
“I’m really sorry for Thelma. I misunderstood her. It’s my fault for not investigating properly. I stumbled upon the arson incident from a year ago, and I also found out that you had communicated with the media back then, so I thought that fire was indeed set by her.”
Sam Noah’s tone was calm, “You’ve lived for so many years, you shouldn’t act so impulsively and make decisions without proper investigation.”
Ruth said, “Yes, yes, yes, I misjudged. I was worried about Tyler, right? If Thelma really is an arsonist, how dangerous would it be for Tyler to be around her? That’s why I decided to take Tyler back to my hometown to raise him.”
What the two said afterward, Thelma had no interest in hearing.
She returned to her room to prepare the things she would need, knowing that Ruth would definitely come looking for her soon. Sure enough, it wasn’t long before there was a knock on the door.
“Come in.”
When Ruth entered, Thelma was standing by the window, the air conditioning in the house was set high, and she was only wearing a long dress, looking very beautiful.
Just a couple of days ago, they had a terrible fight, and now seeing her again made Ruth feel a bit awkward. She rubbed her hands together and said, “Um… I’m really sorry about what happened the other day. I misunderstood you.” After saying that, she took a card out of her bag and placed it on the bed, adding, “There’s some money in here, you can use it to buy something nice for yourself.”
Thelma didn’t even glance at the card. She smiled at Ruth and said, “You’re a mother too. If your child was taken away and you saw him crying and couldn’t do anything about it, how would you feel?”
Ruth frowned but still spoke softly, “I’m really sorry. I misunderstood you. You should rest now.”
She turned to leave, but Thelma called out from behind, “How did Sam Noah’s father die?”
Ruth paused, suddenly turning her head to look at her, her expression not good, “What do you mean? Why are you asking this all of a sudden?”
