Rejected But Not Broken – Chapter 16

Finding you

“I know you want to wait until you finish eating before peeling the shrimp, so it doesn’t get everywhere, but this shrimp tastes better with rice, so I peeled it for you.” How did he know I wanted to eat shrimp with my rice but was afraid of getting my hands dirty and had to give up that choice? What a thoughtful man; who could not love him? We continued eating, and this time it was his turn to talk about the content of the book we had just read. Yet, despite the dry topic, why was I so engrossed?

Could it be that love makes one see beauty in everything? Did I add a filter to him? But what was with the ears perked up at the neighboring tables?

Although we had very few dates due to his work, each time ended smoothly. We always found topics of mutual interest, with so many topics to discuss that we could talk endlessly. Every time we parted, it was with reluctance, and we had a great understanding; he could always guess what I was thinking, and I could always guess what he wanted. If we played a game of mutual understanding, we would definitely come in first. The time spent with him was truly joyful, and I was growing fonder of him. However, I still couldn’t confirm whether my guess of “Does he like me?” was valid. What if he didn’t like me? This feeling of worrying about love was truly unbearable. But after searching high and low, I couldn’t find a cowardly version of Lillie; perhaps there was no such version at all. I decided to boldly ask him directly.

This is a very important question, and I must ask it face to face. I can’t miss a single expression or movement from him.

“Ah King, you have a day off tomorrow, right? I have a question to ask.”

“Sure, I’ll come find you.”

“I’m here, where are we going today?”

Still as handsome as ever! I can never be immune to his looks. I thought for a moment; I can’t miss any of his movements, not even his feet.

“Just stand here.”

He looked at me in surprise, “This is your home downstairs.”

“Yeah.” I returned him a confirming look.

This question is too important for me. To get the answer, I have to risk being discovered by my mom. But it’s strange; I met so many men recently, and she didn’t notice at all. How odd! Looking at his expectant gaze, everything was ready, but I just couldn’t say it. Such words are too explicit for a girl like me! He looked at me with a puzzled expression, caught in my dilemma. Never mind, I’ll just go for it!

“Do you like me?”

“I mean, like in a romantic way.” After saying this, I stared at him wide-eyed.

I could see that I had surprised him; his eyes widened, and his mouth slightly opened, frozen for a full three seconds. Just when I thought he was about to speak, he flicked my forehead.

“Ah!” I rubbed my forehead, how dare he flick me!

“Don’t you have my information? It should say that I’m a cold person.”

“But you weren’t cold when you first met me. Don’t tell me about love at first sight.”

That’s right, I don’t believe in love at first sight. Ever since I experienced life like a CEO novel, I no longer hold any fantasies about the beautiful phrases in such novels.

“Of course, it’s not love at first sight. At first, I was just polite because you were a blind date, but didn’t you notice we get along quite well? It’s because I like you that I treat you well and want to keep seeing you.” I recalled the information I specifically looked up about lying last night; liars often have itchy or even red noses. I looked up at him, and yes, nothing unusual on his face, he looked very sincere. Liars tend to have sweaty hands; I secretly glanced at his hands—dry, thick, and broad palms. I really wanted him to hold mine, but I still couldn’t resist. When I came back to my senses, I found my hand in his palm, and I had reached out myself. Liars want to escape from the questioner; hey, how could that be? He had pulled me into his embrace, and after scrutiny, he hadn’t lied.

“That could also be a liking for a younger sister.” You dare to say that to me, try it!

“I have an older sister and a younger sister; isn’t that enough? I won’t ask for trouble.”

“Lillie.”

Hmm? Why did he suddenly call me? No, that voice… I turned my head sharply, and the woman in front of me was none other than my mom!

“You should leave quickly; that’s my mom. We’ll talk next time.” What a feeling of sneaking around, what should I do?
