“Your favor? What favor?”
Henry stiffened.
He never expected her to be so heartless.
She used to love him so much—was it all fake?
“Sophia, don’t be like this. Just tell me what you want. No matter how much money you ask for, I’ll agree. Please, just go see my mother and find a way to convince her to accept your treatment. You know she’s old and stubborn, but as a doctor, isn’t saving a patient’s life the most important thing to you?”
Sophia stared at him expressionlessly. “So, what does her treatment have to do with me?”
Henry froze for a moment, then said anxiously, “My mother refuses to seek treatment because she feels it would be lowering herself to come to you. I hope you can understand—she’s old, and she has a hard time letting go of her pride. Please, just be accommodating, say a few kind words, lower yourself a little, and help her get treated. I’ll pay you whatever you ask—just name your price!”
Sophia chuckled. “Why should I lower myself and beg someone to accept my treatment?”
“Consider it me begging you! I have no other choice—she refuses to come to you for treatment.”
“That’s your problem.” Sophia smirked coldly.
“But you’re a doctor! Shouldn’t you do everything in your power to save a patient?”
Sophia laughed. “Instead of wasting my time on her, I’d rather focus on other patients who truly need help. Look at the people waiting outside my clinic—there are all kinds of cancer patients here. If I waste time on her, other patients might lose their chance of survival. Tell me, why should I degrade myself and beg her to get treated? If she wants treatment, she can take a number like everyone else. The most I can do is treat her like any other patient. Beyond that, I won’t do anything more.”
Henry grew desperate. In the past, Sophia always listened to him, but now she was completely indifferent.
“Sophia, my mother—”
“Enough. She’s your mother, not mine. The whole world doesn’t have to accommodate her! Your family is rich—just hire someone else to treat her.”
“But—”
“I’m just an ordinary doctor with limited skills. I can’t treat your family’s illnesses.”
Henry felt utterly humiliated.
Back then, he had been so desperate to kick Sophia out. Now, he had lowered himself to come begging her, but she didn’t even acknowledge him.
Just as he was about to leave, a few livestreamers happened to show up.
“Isn’t that Henry?”
“Sophia’s ex-husband? Why is he here?”
“Wasn’t he the one who threw Sophia out? And now he has the audacity to come looking for her?”
Henry quickly ducked away, feeling extremely uncomfortable.
Was this karma?
Back then, he had cheated with Olivia and couldn’t wait to drive Sophia away. She had left just as he wanted, never clinging to him again.
But somehow, he felt an inexplicable emptiness inside.
News about Henry asking Sophia to treat Andrea quickly spread online.
Many people said Andrea deserved it—that this was karma.
Everyone still remembered the viral video of Andrea and Olivia kicking Sophia out. Back then, Andrea was so arrogant, but now, she was begging for help.
How ironic.
—
Sophia didn’t hate Andrea, though she certainly didn’t like her.
She wasn’t refusing to treat her out of personal spite.
The real issue was that patients like Andrea—who refused to take initiative in their own treatment and couldn’t control their temper—rarely survived long, even with medical intervention.
When it comes to terminal illness, a doctor’s skills are only part of the equation.
Mindset plays a crucial role.
Some people live normally until they’re diagnosed with cancer—then, they panic and die within a month.
It’s not the disease that kills them—it’s their mentality.
The online backlash reached Andrea, making her even angrier.
She felt utterly humiliated by the comments.
“Are you insane? You went to that bitch for treatment? Didn’t I tell you not to beg her?! Are you ignoring my words?!” Andrea trembled with rage.
“Mom, please don’t be mad. I just want you to live long enough to see me get married and have children.”
Andrea sighed deeply and said, “Don’t worry, son. I’ve lived for over fifty years—that’s enough. The only thing I can’t let go of is you.”
“I’ve already told Olivia to move out. Once she’s gone, you’ll marry Kim.
Before I die,” she paused, clenching her teeth, “I will make sure you have a bright future. I will make sure you never have to suffer, never have to bow to anyone, and that you’ll always have wealth and power.”
“Mom, what are you planning?” Henry asked uneasily.
“You don’t need to worry about it. I’m already dying—what do I have to be afraid of?”
—
When Henry went downstairs, he saw Olivia packing up her things.
He hesitated for a moment, wanting to slip away, but Olivia called out to him.
“Henry.”
He had no choice but to turn back. “Olivia.”
“Here’s your house key. I’m returning it.”
Henry took the key and saw that Olivia had already packed up everything.
“Do you need help moving?” he asked.
“Do you think pretending to be nice now will change anything?”
Henry had no response.
Olivia was the “other woman,” but she had been with him for years. She had endured public criticism for him. He had once promised to marry her, but never did.
Their relationship had soured.
Then came Kim.
Now, Olivia was leaving.
Only now did Henry realize how much Olivia had sacrificed for him.
Now that the child was born, Olivia’s body had changed slightly, and among the things she packed were several baby items.
