Her words reassured him. Although they had heard of her skills, this was his first time seeing her, and he had been uncertain. The fact that she could diagnose Lincoln Bright’s condition just from taking his pulse was a testament to her remarkable medical expertise.
“Dr. Sophia, please do your best to help Mr. Bright!” the assistant pleaded earnestly.
“No need to remind me,” Sophia replied. “Seven out of ten patients who come to me are seriously ill. If I’m not mistaken, Lincoln Bright’s paralysis was caused by rheumatoid arthritis.”
What puzzled her was how someone as young as Lincoln Bright, from such a well-off family, could develop such a condition. There had to be unusual circumstances behind its onset.
The assistant nodded repeatedly. “You’re absolutely right! It’s been ten years now, and all the doctors have said it’s incurable. Dr. Sophia, is there any hope for him?”
Though he was full of hope, he knew the odds were slim. After all, if it were curable, it would have been treated long ago.
To his surprise, Sophia didn’t answer immediately, but an older man in the clinic couldn’t help interjecting.
“Hey! At Dr. Sophia’s clinic, there’s no such thing as an ‘incurable’ disease. No matter how difficult the case, she can treat it! You can rest assured.”
Sophia shot him a glance and scoffed, “Exaggerating again, are we? Don’t think your flattery will get me to agree to let you drink alcohol.”
The old man froze and stomped off in frustration.
The assistant smiled faintly and noticed that even Lincoln Bright’s expression had softened slightly. He said, “Dr. Sophia, please tell us how to treat my young master’s condition.”
Sophia furrowed her brows, examined Lincoln Bright’s muscles, and pressed on some acupuncture points. To her surprise, his condition was better than she had anticipated. It was clear that his family had spared no expense or effort in his care over the years, including regular massages. Otherwise, his condition would have deteriorated further.
However, while treating rheumatoid arthritis itself wasn’t difficult, treating paralysis caused by it was another matter entirely. Even for her, it wouldn’t be easy.
After pondering for a moment, Sophia finally said, “I’ll need to try a few different methods to determine the most effective one.”
The assistant agreed, and Lincoln Bright began visiting the clinic daily. On the first day, Sophia tried acupuncture, but Lincoln Bright’s legs showed no response. Since acupuncture was ineffective, there was no point in continuing it. On the second day, she combined herbal poultices with internal medicine, continuing the treatment for several days, but the results were still minimal.
Over the next few days, Sophia tried various methods, but none worked. She could only turn to ancient texts, hoping to uncover something she had overlooked.
Her desk was piled high with dozens of books, many written in classical Language.
Livinus brought her a cup of tea, leaned close from behind, and whispered, “What are you reading?”
“Researching. I have a patient with a rather tricky condition, and I haven’t found a good treatment yet,” Sophia replied, her eyes still glued to the book.
“Is the book that fascinating?”
“Hmm?”
“More fascinating than me?” Livinus asked in a low voice.
Sophia paused, then chuckled and looked up, noticing Livinus’s slightly furrowed brow and the palpable tension in the air. Clearly, he was displeased.
Only then did she realize that she’d been so absorbed in her research over the past few days that she’d neglected their… personal time together. And now, Livinus was showing his dissatisfaction.
“Of course, not as fascinating as you!” Sophia wrapped her arms around his neck and teased, “How could our Mr. Scott be compared to some books?”
Livinus raised an eyebrow, his lips pressed in a thin line. “Should I feel flattered to be compared to books by my girlfriend?”
Sophia laughed, leaning in to kiss his lips. The moment their lips touched, Livinus’s gaze darkened. He grabbed the back of her head, pulling her closer for a deep and fervent kiss.
His kisses were possessive, almost as if staking a claim, filled with an intense and fiery passion that starkly contrasted with his usual composed demeanor. Every time he kissed her like this, Sophia felt as though her soul was being taken away. Her whole body became tinglingly sensitive, craving his touch.
Livinus’s eyes grew darker, clearly intending to take things further. To “punish” her, he pinned her hands above her head, leaving her completely exposed to him, and soon claimed her entirely.
Time seemed to blur. By the end, Sophia felt utterly satisfied, all her needs met, even though her legs were weak and her waist ached. She lay in bed, her mind wandering.
After taking a shower, Livinus came out in just a bath towel. Sophia couldn’t help but marvel at his long, toned legs.
Why did the heavens favor this man so much, giving him all the best things in the world?
She voiced this thought, and Livinus walked over, planting a kiss on her forehead before replying softly, “Indeed, why did the heavens favor me so much by giving me the best thing in the world—you?”
