If it were the express delivery of later years, a phone call to urge the package would have blown up after three days. Fortunately, both Harborfield and the capital are cities with developed railway transportation; sending a package to a remote, impoverished area might take one or two months to arrive.
“Report!”
The communications officer saluted Kay, “Company commander, you have a package.”
During the training break, many eyes turned to him in unison.
It was indeed a large and heavy package; Kay felt its weight as soon as he held it. Since the King of Hell Kay returned from vacation with a noticeably better temper, one brave soldier dared to tease, “Company commander, did your family send you something good again?”
Kay was a generous person, and those below him guessed that his family was well-off and cared for him, as he often received various packages. He was not stingy; whether it was food or supplies, he would share. The food standards in the army depended on specific circumstances; the place where Kay was stationed had decent food, with a few pieces of fatty meat in the dishes. Soldiers undergoing high-intensity training got hungry very quickly.
Kay’s mother was concerned about him and sent food to the army every ten days or so. Kay’s father had repeatedly said not to treat him specially, but his mother insisted on continuing. When Kay received packages, he usually shared them with the soldiers under him.
He had quite a bit of pocket money, but he couldn’t bring a lavish lifestyle into the army.
Kay lived as other company commanders did, trying not to draw attention to his eating, clothing, and spending.
This package was not sent by his mother; seeing the address from Duskhaven, Kay immediately knew it was from Whitaker Scarlett.
Isn’t it said that once you have a wife, you forget your mother? His mother sent him so many things, and Kay casually gave them away without feeling distressed. But when it came to the first package Whitaker Scarlett sent him, he couldn’t bear to open it for others to see!
He hugged the package and walked away, “This is from my wife; I can’t share it with you.”
Haha, Company Commander kay is joking again; he’s such a generous person… wait, the company commander has a wife now?
Kay has a partner.
This news spread quickly in the regiment, and the usually jealous Oliver nearly crushed his fist in anger.
“He’s only 20 years old; what does he need a partner for?”
And here he was, 30 years old and still single.
Once you find a wife, you’ll get distracted. Will the time wasted on women drag down your passion for your career?
Oliver clenched his fists in secret. If 20-year-old Kay could find a partner, maybe he shouldn’t have rejected those blind dates. Didn’t the regiment leader say he would introduce him to a female comrade? Oliver had turned it down then and now just wanted to slap himself.
Oliver suddenly realized that if he didn’t find a wife soon, his son would fall behind Kay’s child.
“Regiment leader, about that female comrade you mentioned last time…”
“Get lost! She’s been married for a year and is about to have a baby!”
The regiment leader kicked Oliver out, and Oliver was unconvinced.
It was still Kay’s fault for finding a partner at just 20!
…
Kay returned to the dormitory with the heavy package.
Soldiers shared collective dormitories, but officers had single rooms. Kay’s rank had risen, so it was impossible for him to continue sharing with others.
He opened the package and found that Whitaker Scarlett had sent quite a lot of things.
A wool vest could be worn under formal attire, protecting the chest and back, keeping him warm. This was what Whitaker Scarlett wrote in her letter. Kay wasn’t most concerned about the items; his first priority was to find Whitaker Scarlett’s letter.
In the letter, Whitaker Scarlett mentioned what she had sent and said she had gone to Sablewick with her mother to pick up goods. She discovered a lightweight, warm duck down jacket and wasn’t sure if Kay could wear it during his breaks, so she sent one for now.
The duck down jacket was deep blue; Whitaker Scarlett didn’t know if Kay would have the chance to wear it, so she didn’t choose any flashy colors.
Besides the two pieces of clothing, the package also contained a lot of dried jujubes and several tin cans filled with tea. Whitaker Scarlett expressed her regret, saying that the postal service was too busy; she had originally wanted to send some braised beef but was afraid it would spoil during transit, so she had to think of another way to solve the problem.
