Before Kay could feel pleased, he heard Whitaker Scarlett continue, “Liking soldiers doesn’t mean I want to marry one. Soldiers are admirable, but being a military wife is a very tough role… Kay, I think I might kind of like you.”
Whitaker Scarlett realized that she had developed feelings for Kay.
In the past, she didn’t care whether Kay was involved in smuggling or drug trafficking, where his family was from, or what kind of background they had; it had nothing to do with her. Even though Kay and Leo had saved her, Whitaker Scarlett felt that she owed them a favor, but a favor was not love. She was Whitaker Scarlett; how could she be at a loss?
However, Kay said they were friends, yet he kept pushing her, teasing her heartstrings at every turn.
Whitaker Scarlett was not made of clay; it would be strange if she felt nothing in the face of such a charming young man showering her with attention!
It was precisely because she had feelings that Whitaker Scarlett began to investigate Kay’s identity. Kay was from the capital, and he was an active-duty soldier… Whitaker Scarlett felt like she was slapping herself; she had promised herself not to consider personal feelings until her career was successful.
Whitaker Scarlett also felt wronged; feelings were not like a faucet that could be turned on and off at will.
She believed she was enchanted by Kay’s good looks!
Kay, however, was not interested in anything else; the key point for him was that Whitaker Scarlett had admitted to having feelings for him—he picked her up and spun her around, causing Whitaker Scarlett to exclaim in surprise.
“Put me down, Kay, Kay!”
“I won’t put you down. You said you liked me, so let me hold you a little longer.”
Whitaker Scarlett’s hair brushed against Kay’s face, and the fresh scent filled his nostrils. Even though the night concealed them, his actions were too bold.
Fortunately, this was the open-minded city of Sablewick.
Kay took a deep breath of her fragrance before lowering his arms:
“You said you liked me, so you can’t go back on your word. I’ve never had a girlfriend before; you have to take responsibility for me.”
Whitaker Scarlett almost fainted from anger.
It was one thing to equate feelings with liking, but now it was truly about gender equality—did she really have to take responsibility for Kay?!
She hadn’t taken advantage of him at all!
Whitaker Scarlett couldn’t help but retort, “I never said I wanted to be your girlfriend.”
Kay thought she was just throwing a little tantrum and completely ignored her stubbornness.
“Isn’t it me who wants to be your boyfriend? Don’t worry, I won’t make it hard for you!”
Who said military wives had to suffer? He wanted to give Whitaker Scarlett all the glory back; a person as good as her deserved to enjoy all the good things in life. Being with him wasn’t about hardship; it was about enjoying life!
Kay was full of spirit, and Whitaker Scarlett couldn’t stop him from talking to himself.
She had honestly admitted her feelings for Kay to get him to share his situation; she needed to understand the matters concerning an active-duty soldier.
Kay didn’t hide anything; at this moment, he wouldn’t hesitate to lay his heart bare for Whitaker Scarlett:
“I joined the army at 15. This summer, I participated in a special training session, made a wrong decision during a command, and the higher-ups decided to give me a punishment. I got injured at that time, so I just took the accumulated leave from the past few years… I originally had another month of leave, but before I came out this time, that punishment was verified and canceled, so when I return to capital, I have to go back to my post and can’t be this free anymore.”
Kay felt quite frustrated talking about it; had he known there would be such a twist, he wouldn’t have returned to capital.
If he had known, he could have cultivated his feelings with Whitaker Scarlett before the orders came down. Who knows, maybe Whitaker Scarlett would have already softened up by then. As for how Leo would drive to capital, Kay chose to selectively forget that detail.
“Do you have a fiancée already?”
“No.”
“Do you have an unattainable crush?”
“What’s an unattainable crush?”
“Someone you can’t forget, someone who makes everyone else seem insignificant.”
“Then I do; Scarlett is my unattainable crush.”
The moonlight in Sablewick tonight was beautiful, and Kay felt that the metaphor of “unattainable crush” was very fitting. Scarlett spoke straightforwardly, yet she didn’t have a hint of a village girl’s coarseness. The metaphor of “unattainable crush” felt like feathers brushing against Kay’s heart… Kay joined the army at 15, so he naturally didn’t have the chance to attend university. Thinking that Whitaker Scarlett would be a college student next year, Kay believed he could go to a military academy for further studies.
No fiancée, no unattainable crush; Whitaker Scarlett felt that Kay’s personal life was quite clean. When choosing a husband, one must dig deep; if a man seems appealing and wants to date, all that matters is that he is single:
“Then I declare that you are in the observation period. It’s not that easy to be my boyfriend.”
