Could Amanda pick out popular styles if she went to buy goods?
She wasn’t particularly eloquent either; Whitaker Scarlett could hire a girl in the city who would sell better than Amanda . William disagreed with the idea of investing; that would be taking advantage of his niece!
Amanda felt guilty.
Yes, she couldn’t help, but wasn’t that just taking advantage?
“What about Micheal? When it comes to making money, that’s my job; you need to take good care of our son.”
The Miller Family had no elders to help; William’s parents had passed away long ago, and Amanda ‘s mother had to look after her brothers’ children and do housework. They really couldn’t find anyone to take care of the child. Micheal wasn’t 16; he was only 6!
The couple’s thoughts were actually quite different from most people nowadays. They might not have much education, but they were following the later advocated idea of ‘parents accompanying their children.’ Nowadays, with so many dual-income families, not every family has elders to help look after the kids. Children as young as a few years old can go home alone after being dropped off at school. Everyone raises their kids quite roughly. What companionship and after-school tutoring? Parents are busy working to earn a living, and there’s no time for that!
Even without any family planning, Micheal was their only son… William married late, and Amanda was on her second marriage; they weren’t young anymore.
Elizabeth arrived at the guesthouse early in the morning.
She didn’t know what Kay and Leo liked to eat, so she didn’t bring breakfast. Harborfield had no shortage of various breakfast shops, and Whitaker Scarlett was quite familiar with the food street, leading everyone to eat breakfast. Whitaker Scarlett felt a bit strange inside.
No one knew that she and Kay had been to the food street before.
They didn’t know that Kay had sold eels and eggs with her. The telegram Kay sent her, the electric shock device he gave her for self-defense, and the hand-holding at the train station, along with Kay’s embrace before the train started… They had a secret that no one else knew, as if a bond had been established between them.
Kay, that shameless guy, pretended not to understand:
“Scarlett, what do you want to eat?”
Whitaker Scarlett suppressed the urge to glare at him, “A plate of chicken and noodles.”
Kay’s lips curled up, “That’s too little. You’re too thin; you should eat more. Let’s add fresh juice
A plate of chicken and noodles and a fresh juice; the first time she and Kay came to Harborfield, they ate the same thing.
November had clearly started to cool down, but before the chicken and noodles even reached her stomach, Whitaker Scarlett felt her ears getting a bit hot.
Kay was attentive, helping everyone order food, considerate and warm. William still didn’t believe Kay was an active-duty soldier; where did he get the soldier’s hardworking nature? He didn’t seem like a struggling soldier but rather a young master who enjoyed food and drink!
William was feeling frustrated when their group ordered food without being stingy, and the boss even chimed in with a few words:
“Brother, is this your son-in-law? So filial and generous, and the young man looks quite spirited. I envy you, brother!”
William almost spat blood. Whose son-in-law? If you envy him, take him home!
Who couldn’t see that Kay liked Whitaker Scarlett? Amanda knew, and Elizabeth noticed too. Both women had a good impression of Kay, who didn’t hide his feelings and generously showed his affection.
After breakfast, he asked more directly:
“Scarlett, I heard from Auntie that you’re going to Sablewick alone today? I’m quite worried about you going out alone. Can I accompany you?”
Huh?
Isn’t it more dangerous to have you accompany me?
William felt his back hurt even more.
Leo had already gotten used to Kay’s nature of forgetting friends for the sake of beauty, from the shock of being abandoned the first time to his current calmness. God knows what kind of emotional journey Leo had gone through.
Amanda looked at her niece. Kay was good-looking; did Scarlett have a crush on him?
Elizabeth was conflicted. She had a good impression of Kay; the young man was too enthusiastic towards her daughter, running around and making arrangements, and now he wanted to accompany Scarlett to Sablewick … Elizabeth wasn’t worried about Kay’s character; she was still concerned about Scarlett’s college entrance exam.
Running a business was distracting enough; could she still date?
Whitaker Scarlett didn’t expect Kay to be so bold.
He said it in front of everyone. Even if she refused, Kay could find a way to go himself… However, Whitaker Scarlett realized she didn’t particularly want to refuse. She told herself that Kay could at least help carry the goods.
“Sure, as long as it doesn’t take up your time.”
Kay was accompanying Whitaker Scarlett to Sablewick.
