Destined to Rise – Chapter 144

Commercials

Hughes Lawrence wanted to leave with Whitaker Scarlett. Anyway, Whitaker Scarlett was living alone, and she could find a suitable single room in a building for 10 dollars a month.

Whitaker Scarlett calculated faster than Hughes Lawrence. Was 20 dollars a month a lot?

For Whitaker Scarlett, who had just been reborn, it was a fortune. But for her now, it was just the profit from selling one piece of clothing. Even if she didn’t sell clothes, Elizabeth’s reselling of oil residue could earn that much in a day.

She really valued this house and could afford it.

“I won’t bring any men, but I might bring my mother to live with me. Do you think that’s okay?”

Hughes Lawrence thought it wasn’t worth it, but both the landlord and the tenant were satisfied, so with Hughes Lawrence as a witness, Whitaker Scarlett and Grandma Johnson wrote a contract, and Whitaker Scarlett paid 120 dollars. She had found a place to settle down in Harborfield City.

Grandma Johnson received the money and immediately gave Whitaker Scarlett the key to the house.

Whitaker Scarlett rented the two rooms on the right. Opening the door, only one room had a bed frame, while the other was empty. Fortunately, the rooms were very clean, without dust or cobwebs, and the walls were covered with newspapers. If she wasn’t too demanding, Whitaker Scarlett only needed to buy bedding to move in.

“Grandma Johnson, let’s take care of each other from now on!”

Whitaker Scarlett was in a good mood, and Grandma Johnson snorted heavily through her nostrils.

Whitaker Scarlett wasn’t in a hurry to go back. She hadn’t found a place to stay in Greenfield County because she had discovered that Whitaker Albert, Maria, and Helen were stationed there. Whitaker Scarlett didn’t want to have anything to do with them, so she simply rented a place in Harborfield City.

Staying away from troublesome people and things would definitely be beneficial to her and Elizabeth.

She had acted first and then reported renting the house before telling Elizabeth.

Elizabeth was baffled by Whitaker Scarlett’s actions. They had finally settled down in Wellwater Village, and Uncle Daniel had promised to give them a homestead and land. Why did they suddenly want to move to the capital?

“Scarlett, what are you thinking?”

Whitaker Scarlett wasn’t particularly fond of land, and building a house in the countryside didn’t make much sense.

She wasn’t planning on leaving Elizabeth behind in the countryside either. Her original plan was to take her mother everywhere they went, the two of them relying on each other.  Building a large house for Elizabeth in the countryside while Whitaker Scarlett herself lived freely elsewhere wasn’t her initial intention for leaving the Whitaker Family.

“Do you think it’s good living in the countryside?”

Whitaker Scarlett’s question confused Elizabeth.

Whether living in the countryside was good or not was a question Elizabeth hadn’t even considered because she had lived in the countryside her whole life. Getting married was simply a change from Wellwater Village, facing the loess and turning her back to the sky. Elizabeth’s strongest skills weren’t business or arguing but farming.

The land was a source of comfort for Elizabeth. If one-day, national policies changed and she was no longer allowed to be a self-employed individual, as long as she had land, life would be hard, but she wouldn’t starve to death.

Ultimately, even though she had recently made some money, Elizabeth still lacked confidence in the future.

But she wasn’t someone who would refuse Whitaker Scarlett. Elizabeth could only use Amanda as an excuse:

“If we move to the capital, what about your aunt and cousin?”

Whitaker Scarlett had also considered this issue, but she didn’t think it was a reason to stop them from moving. William felt that the villagers would take care of her and Elizabeth, and Whitaker Scarlett admitted this. But she would eventually become independent; she couldn’t rely on her uncle for the rest of her life, could she?

“We’re going to the capital to do business, not to change our household registration. The village hasn’t allocated land to us yet. By the time we get a homestead to build  a house, we might have saved enough money in the capital to build a house back in the village.”

How could they make money without leaving their hometown?

In this era, even if Whitaker Scarlett understood agricultural techniques, the extremely low prices for agricultural products discouraged her from staying in the countryside to get rich through farming.  What’s more, she didn’t know the first thing about farming!

And the commercial city was only so far from Wellwater Village.
