Inconvenient communication was a real hassle. Whitaker Scarlett’s current small business wasn’t greatly affected yet, but she wouldn’t stay in Wellwater Village forever, as rural areas had even more backward transportation and communication.
Whitaker Scarlett naturally knew how communication tools would advance in the future.
She had no trouble communicating with Kay. Even though Kay was talking about the newly emerging “pager,” Whitaker Scarlett could easily follow the conversation!
He didn’t know why Whitaker Scarlett understood, but their exchange was smooth, putting Kay in a better mood.
And Whitaker Scarlett had mentioned her plans to move to the city—wasn’t that discussing their future together?
Kay had already explained his recent life in his telegram, and he wanted to know if anything had happened on Whitaker Scarlett’s end. He had learned through other channels about Wesley and the three thugs being sentenced. Hearing that Whitaker Scarlett planned to take the college entrance exam next year, Kay felt a strange emotion.
Scarlett wanted to go to university.
Was it related to Walter Janson?
Kay tried to recall Walter Janson’s appearance. Northerners were generally taller, with well-defined features. Even if you called him handsome or dashing, anyone could see that he wasn’t as good-looking as Kay.
“Which university do you want to apply to?”
“Washington or Haborfield, depending on my score next year. Brother kay, don’t you think I’m being unrealistic?”
Walter Janson was in Washington.
But Kay’s family was also in Washington.
Kay encouraged Whitaker Scarlett to apply to a Washington university: “You’re very smart. If you want to go to university, go for it. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, and take care of your health. Don’t overwork yourself… Apply to Washington; the schools in the capital are different.”
Kay was telling the truth; the top universities were in Washington.
There were also better job placement opportunities. He thought Whitaker Scarlett was quite suited to business, and the southern business climate was more open, but it wasn’t impossible to succeed in Washington. Besides, they would have more time together, which Kay valued greatly.
His Scarlett was so beautiful; Kay worried that others would compete for her. He felt more at ease having his wife under his watchful eye!
His wife was amazing; she could already score over 400, so what was the problem with getting into university next year? Kay joined the army at fifteen; unlike Leo, he didn’t look down on Washington Normal University. Getting into university in a small county with poor teaching resources was already impressive. But would a “Washington Normal University” move someone like Kay?
Obviously not.
Kay himself hadn’t gone to university and didn’t care much about it. Now that Whitaker Scarlett wanted to go, he felt he could help her inquire, and he kept it in mind. Knowing that this was Whitaker Scarlett’s first long trip, Kay told her some precautions about train travel. Although Whitaker Scarlett already knew, she appreciated his thoughtfulness.
Leo, whose stomach ache had finally subsided, returned. “It’s done, Kay.”
Seeing Whitaker Scarlett’s puzzled expression, Kay explained briefly:
“I had leo ask someone to change your ticket to a sleeper berth. It seems there were still sleeper berths available on that train.”
Leo thought, “What a lot of effort I put in!” He had called Washington, going through countless transfers before finally getting a sleeper berth. Brother Kay didn’t even acknowledge his efforts, and even downplayed them… Just like the Wesley incident, he and Kay had secretly handled it, and Whitaker Scarlett still didn’t understand the reasons behind it, right?
When dating, you should naturally be good to your significant other.
If Leo had a girlfriend, he wouldn’t treat her badly, but there were different levels of “good.” If you didn’t show your efforts, how would your girlfriend appreciate you more?
Leo couldn’t figure it out.
But Whitaker Scarlett wasn’t a real 18-year-old village girl.
She understood social customs. Changing her ticket from a hard seat to a sleeper berth required considerable influence; it meant finding the right person, perhaps a railway official with some minor authority. But Leo and Kay weren’t from Harborfield; regardless of who they found, it would have taken a lot of effort… Kay’s casual tone made Whitaker Scarlett feel once again that she was being carefully and thoughtfully treated.
Where did Kay learn these tricks? This guy was too good at winning girls over!
In any case, Whitaker Scarlett didn’t dislike Kay at all. Someone so kind and handsome and not at all creepy was hard to dislike.
Whitaker Scarlett’s eyes were already exceptionally bright, and her slight emotional shift made them seem even more tender.
Leo felt something was off. As a highly sensitive single dog, he sensed the change in the atmosphere between the two.
