Whitaker Scarlett slapped her on the back of the hand. Helen yelped in pain and immediately let go.
“You dare hit me?!”
Whitaker Scarlett sneered, “Do you think you’re some big shot? I have nothing to do with the Whitaker family anymore. If you’re not polite to me, I don’t care who you are!”
Helen was speechless.
Back home, Whitaker Scarlett had always been strong-willed and often clashed with Helen, their battles always ending in a draw.
Whitaker Scarlett was no pushover. After the sham of banging her head against the wall, she seemed even more fearless.
Helen shrank her neck, then remembered Whitaker Scarlett’s vulnerability. She sized Whitaker Scarlett up and down:
“You’re just sharp-tongued, Whitaker Scarlett. Does your current boyfriend know about your past?”
Boyfriend?
Apparently, Helen had seen Carson and mistaken him for Whitaker Scarlett’s boyfriend. Whitaker Scarlett didn’t explain; she felt that no one in the Whitaker family had the right to demand an explanation from her. She wasn’t afraid of Helen spreading rumors… her reputation was already bad enough. County East High School didn’t rely on reputation for admission; Whitaker Scarlett didn’t even have to attend classes every day. She wasn’t worried about what others thought of her.
County East High School wanted results, they wanted her to add another undergraduate graduate to the school next year.
Reputation?
Reputation didn’t affect college entrance exam scores.
In the eyes of the village women who judged a woman’s life by whether she married well, reputation was very important. But stepping out of that circle and looking at the world, reputation was insignificant to the success or failure of one’s life!
It wouldn’t affect Whitaker Scarlett’s ability to earn money, nor would it prevent her from getting into university.
Her eyes held contempt; talking to this country bumpkin was a waste of her time.
“Don’t you worry about my business. I heard you’re working odd jobs at Maria Snack Shop? Maria… interesting. I don’t want to have anything to do with anyone in the Whitaker family. If you still have any shame, don’t bother me. Whether Whitaker Rosaliev will lead the Whitaker family to prosperity in the future, I won’t touch their glory. If you dare to harass me, don’t blame me for turning hostile!”
Some people are just thick-skinned.
Whitaker Scarlett disliked everyone in the Whitaker family. The reason she hadn’t retaliated against them was simply because she hadn’t had the time.
If the Whitaker family members insisted on provoking her, Whitaker Scarlett wasn’t a saint; she would definitely deal with them severely.
Helen was indeed working odd jobs, but she wouldn’t admit it.
Maria Snack Shop was a privately owned business, and odd jobs were not respectable. But Helen didn’t want to lose face in front of her old rival, so she retorted stubbornly: “It’s Maria’s shop! You’re jealous that Sister Rosalie got into university and has a good boyfriend, and that even Sister Rosalie’s maternal uncle’s family is making a lot of money… haha, but you were kicked out, and now you’re trying to find a new boyfriend to surpass Sister Rosalie?”
It was indeed Maria’s shop.
Without family connections, who would hire someone as lazy as Helen to help out?
Helen said the shop belonged to Whitaker Rosalie’s maternal uncle’s family, but Whitaker Scarlett recalled her aunt Maria’s simple attire and her hands, which were surprisingly free of calluses.
Maria was in the county city to take care of Whitaker Rosalie’s studies.
The shop might belong to Maria and Whitaker Albert.
Whitaker Scarlett got the information she wanted and didn’t bother to deal with the brainless Helen anymore: “Remember what I said, don’t bother me, and we can coexist peacefully for now!”
A flash of ferocity crossed Whitaker Scarlett’s usually pitiful eyes.
She had been a manager before; her authority was implicit. Helen, a 17-year-old country girl, was quite intimidated by Whitaker Scarlett’s seriousness.
“You… you…”
Helen stood there stammering, watching Whitaker Scarlett leave.
After a long while, she finally snapped out of it.
She had originally intended to use this opportunity to threaten Whitaker Scarlett into helping her infiltrate the County East High School. Since Whitaker Scarlett could find a boyfriend in the school, why couldn’t she, Helen?
Helen knew she wasn’t as attractive as Whitaker Scarlett, but she was a clean and innocent girl, no worse than Whitaker Scarlett—Helen bit her lip hard. Whitaker Scarlett had high standards; she had previously liked her future brother-in-law Walter Janson, so her current boyfriend wouldn’t be much worse. He was a little dark, but what did a man’s skin tone matter? His features were well-proportioned. Helen tried to recall Carson’s appearance.
She had to expose Whitaker Scarlett’s true face to that boy!
He was being deceived by Whitaker Scarlett; upon learning the truth, he would surely be grateful to her. Gradually, she and the boy would become closer.
