In contrast to the cheerful sound of her heels echoing in the hospital hallway with every step, Nia’s expression was troubled.
Amaya had called her several times and sent her several messages that were close to blackmail.
She seemed to be much more persistent and tenacious than she had thought.
“How ignorant!”
Nia couldn’t even imagine what Amaya had done to Lola, or to what extent, that she was being sued for violent crime.
‘Anyway, old habits die hard!’
Amaya had caused a stir several times in school due to school violence.
But thanks to her well-off parents, they quietly cleaned up after Amaya every time she caused trouble, so she was able to finish school without being expelled.
Although she had made an unfair deal with Amaya, this was not the result Nia wanted.
She knew that Amaya’s personality was very unstable and fickle, so she hoped that Amaya would use various means and methods to harass Lola and drive her out of the hospital.
Or…
If she was going to beat her up, she should have just killed her. But the current situation was neither one nor the other, which was really frustrating.
Judging from the way things were going, Amaya seemed to be desperately trying to avoid a police investigation even after committing assault.
Nia could tell exactly what Amaya’s expression was like without even seeing it.
She must be trembling with anxiety.
And she must be harboring resentment towards me.
Nia thought that Amaya, cornered, might do anything, so she had come to the hospital to meet her.
Finally, Nia arrived in front of Amaya’s hospital room and was about to grab the doorknob and turn it when she felt a presence behind her along with the sound of someone clearing their throat.
Nia’s pupils widened and stopped as she turned her head.
“Ha, Dylan.”
“What are you doing here?”
Dylan seemed very surprised to see Nia standing in front of Amaya’s hospital room. But his voice was cold as he asked sharply.
“What are you doing here?”
Like someone caught doing something bad, Nia’s heart was pounding wildly, but she tried to calm down and asked nonchalantly.
“I asked first.”
Dylan’s gaze, as if trying to trap her, seemed quite persistent, but Nia didn’t avoid it and looked straight at him, replying coldly to the point of being annoying.
“We’re not that close, so do I need to answer?”
“Do I even need to answer you when we’re not that close?”
Dylan felt a strange unease.
Nia and Amaya.
He couldn’t shake the absurd thought that the two were somehow connected and had deliberately orchestrated this.
Even as he shook his head, dismissing it as nonsense, the suspicion he’d raised was hard to shake off.
“You better answer my question straight if you don’t want to be misunderstood.”
I hope I’m wrong.
He didn’t have any fondness for Nia, but he wanted to believe she wasn’t bad enough to do something so awful.
A smirk played on Nia’s lips before she finally spoke.
“The way you’re talking makes me feel like a suspect. I’m really not happy about this.”
Dylan’s gaze, as if piercing through her, was sharp. Yet, Nia stubbornly maintained a composed, haughty expression.
“I know you’re a prosecutor without you having to say it, but do you have to make such a show of it in front of me?”
Instead of answering the question, Nia spouted nonsense, prompting Dylan to harden his expression and abruptly open the hospital room door.
He wanted to see if there was anything inside that could be a clue.
Anxious, Nia followed Dylan in, and was momentarily relieved to find the room empty.
It was a stroke of luck that Amaya wasn’t there.
They almost ended up in a three-way confrontation.
If Dylan interrogated her, Amaya might spill everything, down to the last detail.
“What’s your relationship with Amaya?”
Dylan suddenly turned around and asked abruptly, causing Nia to blink in surprise.
“Nia,” Dylan called her name again before Nia reacted.
“She’s my client.”
“Client?”
“Amaya hired me for a divorce lawsuit.”
Dylan narrowed his brow, looking unconvinced. Nia’s lips twisted slightly.
“It’s funny, though. I don’t know why I have to tell you every little thing when we’re not even close.”
“Where is your client right now?”
Ignoring Nia’s words, Dylan asked sharply. Nia openly wore a sour expression.
“Why are you asking me that?”
“You must know.”
“Then why are you looking for my client? I’d like to know the reason.”
Even though she knew perfectly well why Dylan was looking for Amaya, Nia feigned ignorance.
“You don’t need to know that!”
“Dylan, you know you can be really annoying sometimes?”
Nia retorted, feeling resentful of Dylan’s dismissive attitude.
Dylan stared at Nia for a long moment before asking seriously.
“You don’t know what your client has done, do you?”
“Do I need to know that too?”
Couldn’t he have shown her a warm look just once?
Then she wouldn’t have made such a ridiculous deal with the ignorant and senseless Amaya.
And she wouldn’t have harbored such bad intentions.
Every time Nia faced Dylan’s consistently cold demeanor, she couldn’t help but feel a surge of resentment.
“I know you have some bad feelings towards me…”
Dylan cut Nia off.
“I’ve never had those feelings for you.”
Dylan’s feelings towards Nia were neutral.
To him, she was nothing more and nothing less than a classmate.
“Tell your client to cooperate with the police investigation and not resort to petty tricks. Or things could get even worse for her.”
Nia couldn’t suppress her miserable feelings, as she felt more pathetic than Amaya.
“Nia, I want to believe you’re not that bad.”
Dylan left those cryptic words behind and walked out of the room.
Nia’s face contorted in displeasure.
He should have just said nothing.
He probably didn’t know how much that one sentence had scarred her heart.
Openly displaying her resentful feelings towards Dylan, Nia’s bitter gaze lingered on the hospital room door for quite some time.
