Destined to Rise – Chapter 170

Numbers

Jace’s father turned over in the dark, “Just endure a bit longer and see how things develop.”

Isn’t it foolish? If you want to do something, you have to wait for the storm to pass. Wait until Parker Jace is no longer so infatuated with that girl before taking action.

If the man from the hotel who came looking for Parker Jace had no real ability, why would there be such urgency to deal with a rural girl? It wouldn’t matter when they acted; could someone so helpless outshine the Parker family?

Whitaker Scarlett was completely unaware of the commotion in the Parker family. However, it seemed Caroline was quite petty, and she had to be wary of retaliation.

Whitaker Scarlett bought two pounds of meat and two bags of sugar to take to Hughes Lawrence’s house, thanking him and his wife for helping her find a place to live. She was extremely satisfied with the current rental. Located centrally in the business city, it was particularly convenient to go in any direction. The room was spacious, and the yard was large, making it easy for Whitaker Scarlett to store her bicycle.

Although Grandma Johnson had a strange temper, she wouldn’t actively cause trouble. She charged 20 dollars a month for rent and never bothered Whitaker Scarlett and her mother as long as they didn’t bring anyone home overnight.

Whitaker Scarlett occasionally brought some food, but Grandma Johnson refused it, maintaining the boundary between landlord and tenant, showing no intention of getting close to Whitaker Scarlett and her mother. The familial affection Whitaker Scarlett lacked was compensated by Elizabeth,  William, and Amanda . Whether Grandma Johnson liked her or not, she didn’t care at all.

This rental was good, and she wanted to thank Hughes Lawrence and his wife.

She also had the idea of gathering information.

Hughes Lawrence knew Parker Jace, so he must understand the Parker family’s situation.

The Hughes family and the Johnson family were not far apart, one in a tube building and the other in a courtyard house. When Hughes Lawrence’s wife saw Whitaker Scarlett carrying things to their door, the smile on her face never faded. Whether the items were rare or not, of course, they were precious! But she also found Whitaker Scarlett quite charming; she was generous and straightforward, who wouldn’t want to interact more with her?

So what if she came from a rural background? Paying 20 dollars a month to rent from the Johnson family, who would dare to do that without money?

“You are very welcome at our home, sister-in-law. Next time, you mustn’t be so polite!”

Whitaker Scarlett had climbed up from the bottom in her previous life through sales, and some habits were ingrained in her bones. When visiting someone, regardless of how much you bring, having a “gift” is a sign of politeness. Being too polite might seem strange? But being polite is never a bad thing. She and the Hughes family were not related at all; having exchanges would help build a relationship.

When someone invited Hughes Lawrence to dinner, only Hughes Lawrence’s wife and children were at home. They said it was a child, but the oldest was already 15 years old, not much younger than Whitaker Scarlett, yet still very childish. Whitaker Scarlett gradually steered the conversation towards the Parker family, and Hughes Lawrence’s wife was taken aback, thinking Whitaker Scarlett had taken a liking to Parker Jace.

But she had heard while buying groceries that the new girl, was beautiful and had found a handsome partner who drove a big car.

Gossip spread too quickly; Kay hadn’t even entered the door before he was spotted.

Whitaker Scarlett didn’t think there was anything to hide. Honestly, she felt like she had offended Parker Jace’s mother and was afraid of retaliation from the Parker family.

“Sister-in-law, you see how this matter has stirred up…”

Hughes Lawrence’s wife also found it surprising, “You really haven’t dated Parker Jace?”

Hughes Lawrence had also gossiped about Parker Jace’s family conditions at home. Hearing that Whitaker Scarlett had offended someone, Hughes Lawrence’s wife was a bit worried for her:

“The Parker family is quite well-off. His mother is the office director at her unit, and his father works in the government.”

Hughes Lawrence’s wife lowered her voice.

Not only does Parker Jace’s father work in the government, but the Parker family is also connected to various units, absolutely local power players. No wonder Parker Jace has such high standards; they have the confidence!

The worry in Hughes Lawrence’s wife’s eyes was evident, and she couldn’t help but advise Whitaker Scarlett:

“Let me tell you something from the heart, who doesn’t like a handsome partner? But sometimes, good looks don’t pay the bills. I heard your partner is from out of town. If the Parker family wants to make things difficult for you, being so far away, what can he do to help?”

Finding Parker Jace would be different; he was a decent young man with a good job, and more importantly, his family was well-off.

Hughes Lawrence had said at home that Parker Jace was quite fond of Whitaker Scarlett. The difference in family backgrounds shouldn’t be a big deal; no matter how much Parker Jace’s mother opposed it, when has there ever been a parent who could outmaneuver their child?

Whitaker Scarlett frowned slightly, realizing that the Parker family was indeed a small local power.

“Thank you, sister-in-law. I don’t want to change my partner; I’ll think about how to handle this matter myself.”

The Parker family is numerous and powerful, with family members spread across various units and departments. In the eyes of Hughes Lawrence’s wife, they are already an impressive family.
