After coming out of the civil affairs bureau, Leon still wore that serious and aloof expression. He stuffed their marriage certificate into his bag, pulled down the zipper with force, and said to her, “I’ll go back with you to move your things to my place.”
After starting work, Leon no longer lived with his family; he had bought a house on his own.
Samantha was still a bit dazed and nodded.
Leon helped her tidy up a bit before taking her and her luggage to his house. Throughout the process, Samantha felt like a puppet being controlled.
After organizing her things, Leon said to her, “There are still matters in the team, I’ll leave first.”
After he finished speaking, he really just left without giving her any explanation about his place, and since it was her first time there, she felt a bit lost.
Once Leon left, Samantha finally calmed down. It was only then that she realized, had she been tricked?
Didn’t we say we would just try it out? How could we so muddle-headedly get the certificate? Plus, she hadn’t prepared anything, hadn’t even put on makeup or changed into something nice.
That was a wedding photo!
Thelma was also stunned when she heard her sister say she and Leon had gotten their marriage certificate.
“I just asked you how things were going with Leon, and you said you were just holding hands. How come as soon as I left, you two went and got the marriage certificate? Sister, I’m your sister; are you not being honest with me?”
“How could that be? When you just came, we really were only holding hands.”
“Then what happened after I left?”
Samantha could hear the mischief in her tone and scolded, “You little brat!”
“Stop teasing me. How far did it go?”
Samantha’s face turned red, but she still recounted what happened after Leon came over: he hugged her and kissed her, then took her to get the certificate, and moved her things to his house.
“So, do you think I was tricked? How could I get the certificate so easily?”
Thelma burst out laughing, “It seems Leon couldn’t wait any longer and was eager to marry you.”
Samantha: “…”
Thelma continued, “But now that the marriage certificate has been obtained, it’s useless to dwell on it. We should think about how to live our lives from now on.”
Samantha felt her sister made sense. Now that they had already gotten the marriage certificate, worrying about these trivial matters indeed wouldn’t help much.
When Leon returned in the afternoon, as soon as he entered, he was greeted by the aroma of food. Samantha came out holding a of soup and said to him, “You’re back? Let’s eat first.”
Leon didn’t say anything. He took off his clothes, and Samantha walked over to take them, neatly folding them and placing them on the sofa.
She did it very naturally, a kind of familiarity that also carried a sense of warmth. Leon remembered how his drawer was always a mess during school, while hers was always neatly organized. It seemed her habit of tidying up hadn’t changed.
Leon walked to the dining table in a daze, only to see a large spread of dishes she had prepared. Over the years, every time he returned home, it had always been empty. He was usually too busy to cook, either eating out or ordering takeout, and when he was really tired of it, he would come home to eat.
At this moment, looking at the table full of sumptuous dishes, a sense of satisfaction filled his heart, realizing he was married and had a wife who cooked for him.
He looked at the person standing beside him, the woman he had long admired; she had become his wife and was cooking for him.
Seeing him standing there without moving, Samantha said, “What are you dazed for? Hurry up and eat, or the food will get cold.”
Only then did he sit down. Samantha added, “Today is the first day we got our marriage certificate, so it’s a bit of a celebration, that’s why I made a big spread.” She felt a bit shy saying this.
“Mm.” He simply replied.
Samantha: “…”
She looked at him, only to see he had already picked up his plate and spoon to eat, seemingly not taking it too seriously. Samantha felt speechless; how could she have married such a cold and dull husband? There was simply no sense of romance at all.
After dinner, Samantha was just about to clean up the dishes when Leon told her to sit aside while he cleaned up. Samantha didn’t insist and sat on the sofa, turning on the TV. The news was on, and she was too lazy to change the channel.
Leon came out after a while and sat down on the other side of the sofa. For a moment, neither of them spoke, only the sound of the TV could be heard.
Although they were already married, Samantha felt a bit awkward. She rubbed her hands nervously on her thighs.
“I… where will I sleep later?” Samantha asked.
“In the master bedroom.”
