The Luna and Her Child – Chapter 26

Flower

-You will dislocate her hip.

She seizes a beverage, and subsequently, the whistle sounds. She re-enters the ring, and after a minute, she finds herself in that familiar position. The girl intends to strike her in the face with her knee. I await the opportune moment to issue the signal, and at last, I perceive it.

“AT PRESENT!”I shout. Ruby follows my instructions precisely, and the girl is on the ground with a dislocated hip. After ten seconds, the whistle sounds, and Ruby emerges victorious. She is exuberantly leaping and, in her excitement, she jumps into my embrace.

You were correct! Thank you! Thank you very much!“She exclaims.”

“You are welcome!”I emit a chuckle. I return to the girls, deliberately avoiding glancing at my companion, despite the alluring scent that permeates the air and the palpable sensation of his gaze upon me. I cannot endure witnessing him avert his gaze or regard me with disdain.

Elaine is approaching me to engage in the next fight. Elaine triumphs in her bout with relative ease. Shortly, Serena awakens. She excels in combat effortlessly. The three of us are currently representing our group admirably. I overheard on the loudspeaker that finals for the races were taking place. The race commences in 10 minutes for the human category and in 30 minutes for the wolf category. Top 5 Women in Human Form: First place, Celine; Second place, Serena ; Third place, Claire; Fourth place, Everly; Fifth place, Maeve.

“In the Women’s Wolf category, first place was awarded to Celine Wood, second place to Claire, third place to Brooklyn, fourth place to Serena, and fifth place to Everly.”

Subsequently, they identified the individuals, but my excitement prevented me from focusing. All confrontations will be postponed, prompting the three of us to proceed to the races.

I observe Gavin and Norah approaching, and they appear quite enthusiastic about our presence. They accompany us to observe us. With two minutes remaining before the race, I seize my phone and earphones. I played “Blow” by Ed Sheeran and Chris Stapleton; it serves as my motivational anthem. I am engaging in a brief stationary jog. Feeling exhilarated, I then observe him. Concentration becomes exceedingly difficult in his presence. I instruct myself to direct it towards anger. I turn away from him and focus intently.

Upon Serena’s nudge, I remove my headphones and hoodie. All participants are prepared, and upon the sound of the whistle, I will depart. I sprint with maximum effort. Exerting myself to the utmost. I am the inaugural individual to reach the finish line. I return to the leaderboard, but they are awaiting the men’s results before posting. It appears futile to me, as we are all aware of our respective standings. The next participants are the men, with Antonio, whom I previously defeated, positioned in the lineup. He smiles at me, and I reciprocate the smile. The whistle sounds, and they commence. He secured second place. Subsequently, they published the times:

Female:

Celine Wood – Lunar Howl Moon  – 11.00

Serena  – Lunar Howl Moon  – 11:57

Claire – Bloodfang Moon – 11.62

Maeve – Bloodfang Moon – 11.69

Everly – Flower Moon – 11.81

Antonio – Blood Moon – 11.01

Ryker – Lunar Howl Moon  – 11. 02

Ayden – Blood Moon – 11.08

Miguel – Harvest Moon – 11.11

Remarkably, I achieved second place when including the male participants. I am exceedingly pleased. “I am consistently slightly slower than you,” Antonio remarks with a flirtatious grin, and I reciprocate with a smile.

“You were nearly correct,” I jest. I perceive a faint growl. I pivot and collide with what resembles a brick wall. A fragrant brick wall, which coincidentally is my friend. He gazes at me with widened eyes and a tightened jaw.

“I apologize,” I utter, before stepping aside. I take my jumper and bag and proceed to the wolf race with Elaine and Serena.

“That was uncomfortable,” Serena observes. Upon arrival at the ‘Wolf form’ race venue, the male competitors will commence first this time. They proceed to the tents and return as wolves.

The whistle sounds, and the wolves sprint away. I am uncertain about the identities of the wolves, except for Noah and Ryker. I must await the publication of the scores. The girls proceed to the tent to disrobe and change. We all queue up, and upon the sound of the whistle, we commence. I exert all my effort, striving with maximum intensity. I once again crossed the finish line first, and it is exhilarating. I return and enter the tent to get dressed. The results have been published. While I am proceeding to the board. I observe Cohen at the board, shaking his head. Upon seeing me, he abruptly departs. I examine the leaderboard and observe:
