After Divorce, No Second Chance – Chapter 5

Dinner

Macy leaned her little head on her father’s shoulder, counting the food she had eaten that evening.

Jacob nodded and then touched Macy’s pigtails, asking, “Did the teacher braid your hair?”

“Yes, Teacher Kyra did it. She said this hairstyle looks good on me.” Macy’s soft and sweet voice carried a hint of pride.

“Yes, it looks good.”

“Tomorrow, Daddy will braid your hair like this.”

As they spoke, the father and daughter had already reached the electric bike. Jacob took out a small helmet from under the seat and put it on Macy, then had her stand on the footboard.

“Macy, stand steady.”

“Daddy is going to start the engine.”

“Yay, let’s go!”

Macy energetically shouted her slogan.

Jacob started the electric bike and soon returned to the apartment they were renting.

This was a resettlement community, and the rent was much cheaper than in regular neighborhoods.

He rented a fifty-square-meter one-bedroom apartment, equipped with all the necessary household appliances, and the rent was 1500 per month.

In Coastville, a strong second-tier provincial capital, this price was indeed considered cheap.

As he opened the door, a delicious aroma wafted through the air. “Wow, it smells so good!”

“Auntie is here!”

Macy first took a deep sniff, then changed into her slippers and ran towards the kitchen.

“Macy, don’t come in here; it’s very smoky.”

Just as Macy was about to dash into the kitchen, a pretty girl poked her head out from inside.

“I knew it was Auntie who came!”

“Macy missed Auntie so much.”

Macy’s chubby little face was filled with smiles, clearly showing that she really liked the girl in front of her.

“Auntie missed Macy too, so I came.”

The girl winked at Macy.

“Lara, aren’t you working today?”

Jacob wasn’t surprised by the girl’s appearance; she often came over, especially in the past month, when she would visit every few days.

However, the relationship between the girl and Jacob was somewhat awkward.

This girl was Karen’s younger sister, named Lara.

She was a student in the journalism department at Coastville University, currently in her Final year, but she had started working before the New Year and had been an intern reporter at the Coastville Evening News for several months now.

She had always opposed her sister’s divorce from Jacob and firmly supported her brother-in-law.

Even though she knew her sister had divorced Jacob, she still came to her brother-in-law’s house as usual to help cook and take care of Macy.

Because of this, Macy really liked this pretty aunt.

“I just had an interview task this afternoon, and I finished work after that.”

“Brother-in-law, go wash your hands; dinner will be ready soon.”

Lara replied and then went back into the kitchen.

Jacob took off his work uniform, which was soaked with sweat. After running deliveries for several hours, it was impossible not to sweat.

The delivery uniform was designed to be windproof and warm, and although it wasn’t cold, it wasn’t breathable either, so sweat easily soaked through the shirt underneath.

So, Jacob took off his shirt and changed into a dry one.

By the time he finished washing up, there were already four dishes on the dining table: braised eel, stir-fried bamboo shoots with meat, crispy pork hock, and stir-fried lotus root slices.

“Wow, so much delicious food.”

“I want to eat more!”

Looking at the exquisite dishes on the dining table, Macy’s big eyes sparkled with excitement. Perhaps she inherited her father’s genes; the little girl was a foodie. Even though she had already had dinner at kindergarten, seeing the delicious food on the table made her lick her lips in anticipation.

“What a little glutton!”

Lara smiled as she lifted Macy onto a chair and began serving rice for the three of them. She herself had a small appetite and only filled her bowl halfway, while she served Macy a little less than half a bowl.

Then she picked up a large bowl to fill it with rice.

“Lara, let me do it myself.”

Jacob quickly snatched the bowl away and only served himself half a bowl of rice.

Although he was skeptical about the system’s tasks, Jacob decided to give it a try; after all, even without the system’s tasks, he needed to lose weight.

In fact, Jacob wasn’t overweight before marriage; he had a standard weight. However, in the first two years after marriage, his career was going smoothly, and with the arrival of little Macy, Karen was also “gentle and virtuous.” In those two years, Jacob gained over fifty pounds, and his weight directly exceeded two hundred pounds.

At present, his weight is 192 pounds, having lost more than ten pounds from his peak.

“Brother-in-law, is it that these dishes don’t suit your taste?”
