Destined to Rise – Chapter 146

Step

Grandma Johnson came back with a broom.

“You’re back. My aunt came to help move today. You didn’t eat either, did you? We made some dumplings.”

A few dumplings weren’t worth much, and Grandma Johnson’s attitude was cold:

“When you rented the house, you said it was for two people.”

Grandma Johnson wasn’t afraid of renting the house to two rural women, but if another woman and child moved in, would there be a man coming to live later? She was a lonely old woman, and they were a family. Grandma Johnson was afraid that she would be inviting wolves into her house.

Amanda also saw that Grandma Johnson was not easy to get along with, and quickly explained:

“Auntie, we still have pigs at home, we dare not stay overnight in the city.”

Grandma Johnson didn’t want the dumplings Whitaker Scarlett and the others left, and went to cook her own meal. Amanda didn’t intend to stay overnight in the commercial city. There was no one at home, what if thieves came? She had carefully raised two pigs for more than half a year, and they were about to be sold. If they were stolen, Amanda would be heartbroken.

It was only three o’clock in the afternoon. Whitaker Scarlett and Elizabeth were going to stay at Grandma Johnson’s tonight, so they sent Amanda to the bus station.

Micheal was reluctant to leave the capital. Everything here was so new and different from the impoverished countryside.

“Sister will bring you to the commercial city to study sooner or later. You must be a good boy at home, and don’t daydream in class. The students in the commercial city are very good, and you can’t fall behind them.”

Whitaker Scarlett, decisive as ever, moved directly to the provincial capital.

Before leaving, she obtained several letters of introduction from Uncle Daniel, facilitating her trip to Sablewick.  Whitaker Scarlett’s swift move caught them off, guard. “She just moved away like that? I haven’t heard of any relatives of the  Miller family. William’s sister, who married to the neighboring county, hasn’t been in contact with the family for ages. Where do you think Whitaker Scarlett and Elizabeth will go to live?”

Carson’s mother wasn’t particularly concerned. Whitaker Scarlett was always organized, and she had discussed her move with Uncle Daniel.

Since even Carson’s father had no objections, Carson certainly didn’t:

“Why do you care so much? Where could she possibly go? Her household registration is still in the village!”

Not many people went out to work like William, but it wasn’t unheard of. Uncle Daniel didn’t have the authority to restrict villagers’ movements, so he felt his wife was interfering too much.

He muttered, “Could it be that they’re unhappy about their land not being allocated yet?”

Uncle Daniel also suspected that Whitaker Scarlett had found a partner and moved in with him.  But on second thought, it seemed unlikely. Who would be so generous as to take in even their mother-in-law?

She kept mumbling about Whitaker Scarlett’s actions.

On the Whitaker Family’s side, Maria and Whitaker Albert couldn’t accept the news they’d heard.

Whitaker Scarlett had actually transferred into County County East High School and was preparing for the upcoming college entrance examination. It wasn’t through some man’s connections; she had genuinely passed the transfer exam… How was that possible?!

Elizabeth was nothing, a woman who couldn’t even bear a son; Maria had always looked down on her. Now that Whitaker Scarlett also wanted to go to university, Maria found it laughable!

It wasn’t just laughable; she was also a little afraid.

“Old man, what if that stinky girl really gets into university?”

What kind of person was Whitaker Scarlett? If she could study, she wouldn’t have dropped out of junior high.  In Maria’s mind, the Whitaker Scarlett of the past was a brainless fool. She suspected that Walter had tutored Whitaker Scarlett when they were involved.

Walter was her future son-in-law. Her daughter  said Walter would have a bright future, and Maria was proud that her daughter had secured such a partner.

But Walter and Whitaker Scarlett’s past was still unclear, so Maria was wary of their relationship rekindling.

Why did Whitaker Scarlett suddenly want to go to university?

Could Walter have contacted her?

Walter, having Rosalie, was still thinking about that worn-out shoe, Whitaker Scarlett…

Whitaker Albert was also annoyed.

“Don’t tell Rosalie about this. That stinky girl can’t be allowed to turn things around. She hates the Whitaker Family!”

Their methods against Whitaker Scarlett were underhanded, so what? The Whitaker Family was poor; they could only afford to send one child to university. Their daughter, Rosalie, was capable, so the Whitaker Family should focus on cultivating her. If Whitaker Scarlett hadn’t misbehaved, they wouldn’t have had a chance to exploit the situation!

Back then, if she had died from hitting her head, that would have been the end of it.

But she didn’t die; she woke up and disrupted their plans step by step.
