Destined to Rise – Chapter 135

Disgust

His car with Leo was ambushed. Kay shot without hesitation, buying them a chance to escape. Then, he found a familiar face on the roadside. Leo’s eyes nearly popped out:

“Isn’t that Sister-in-law’s uncle?”

William’s clothes were soaked in blood.

Mostly other people’s blood, a little of his own—a terrifying sight. He had a large gash on his back, and the blood was flowing profusely. Kay found someone to treat William’s wounds. William had a high fever that wouldn’t break. He and Leo couldn’t just leave him at a roadside hospital.

William had likely been attacked by the same people who tried to rob him and Leo. Whitaker Scarlett had said her uncle had gone out to do bricklaying work… Traveling from Greenfield County to the outskirts of Zoriville to do bricklaying? Kay had no choice but to contact someone and call the guesthouse in Sablewick:

“Scarlett, I can’t go to Sablewick this time. Go back to Greenfield by yourself, and I’ll see you when I return.”

“Okay!”

His unscrupulous future wife hung up the phone with remarkable cheerfulness!

Kay couldn’t help but laugh.

But his luck… wasn’t Whitaker Scarlett destined to be his wife? Although William was only her uncle, he clearly held a more important place in Whitaker Scarlett’s heart than Whitaker Chris. Kay saved William, essentially saving his “future father-in-law’s” life!

“Uncle, you really…”

Leo thought Kay’s smile was too creepy; even a weasel that had successfully stolen a chicken wouldn’t look so sinister.

In bed, William shifted restlessly in his sleep.

Whitaker Scarlett was completely unaware of Kay’s situation, not knowing that he was showing filial piety on her behalf.

A single grain of rice brings gratitude; a peck of rice brings resentment. If the kindness far exceeds a peck of rice, it either leads to mortal enemies or a family… Sanders Wren did her best to see Whitaker Scarlett off on the train, and Whitaker Scarlett, carrying three large bags of clothes, took the train back to Harborfield.

These three bags of women’s clothing represented all her current capital plus the 300 dollars borrowed from Amanda. If anything happened to the goods, Whitaker Scarlett would be back to square one.

Whitaker Scarlett’s trip to Sablewick lasted four or five days, most of which was spent on the train.

Meanwhile, Helen kept watch outside the County East High School gate, finally catching Carson.

Carson hadn’t been home for two weekends. Whitaker Scarlett had visited the school a few days earlier, giving him some English materials she had compiled. Carson, following Whitaker Scarlett’s methods, had found his studies more effective.

Carson was overjoyed and decided to go home that week to ask Whitaker Scarlett for further guidance.

But as soon as he left the school gates, Helen intercepted him.

“Are you Whitaker Scarlett’s boyfriend?”

Carson’s ears burned. Helen knew she had guessed correctly from his expression.

Helen, like a hunter who had successfully made a kill, desperately suppressed her triumph:

“…I have something to tell you about Whitaker Scarlett.”

Scarlett’s matter?

Carson was very interested in Whitaker Scarlett’s affairs, but he wasn’t a fool; on the contrary, Carson was very intelligent.

“Who are you?”

He kept a distance from Helen.  There was a calculating glint in this girl’s eyes, which Carson didn’t like. His instincts told him to be wary.

“Don’t worry about who I am.  Anyway, what I’m saying is the truth. Whitaker Scarlett is no good. She ruined her reputation in the countryside and was driven out by her family. Her mother was also implicated and driven away by the Whitaker family. Whitaker Scarlett not only had an affair with a scoundrel but also seduced her future brother-in-law. She just likes to deceive men… Such a hussy. I’m afraid you’ll be deceived, so I came to warn you!”

Helen didn’t mention that she was her cousin.

Last time, when she spoke ill of Whitaker Scarlett in front of the gatekeeper and school leaders, she stated her identity and their attitudes changed drastically.

Helen couldn’t quite figure out the reason, so she simply didn’t mention that she was Whitaker Scarlett’s cousin.

With such a cousin, she felt ashamed, so she didn’t want to be too explicit.

Helen was practically swearing oaths. She described the details clearly, and Carson’s dark face flushed red as if about to explode. Of course, he was unhappy. He had vaguely heard these rumors before, but having spent time with Whitaker Scarlett, Carson trusted his judgment.

He was so angry that his face turned red!

Scarlett isn’t like that. It’s not her fault that she’s pretty.

Being pretty, men liking her, in the end, it’s all blamed on her?

She didn’t rely on her looks to get by. She was diligent and hardworking, earning money to support her family while also striving to continue her education… In Carson’s heart, Whitaker Scarlett was the perfect image.  Someone coming out to smear Whitaker Scarlett, how could Carson bear it!

“Shut up!”

Carson looked at Helen with disgust. “In broad daylight, you run out to slander someone but refuse to reveal your identity. You’re definitely not a good person. You’re jealous of Whitaker Scarlett, you can’t stand her having a better life… You wouldn’t be a Whitaker family member, would you?”
