Leo hesitated, then lowered his voice until it was almost inaudible. “They said Scarlett is infamous in Larkspur Village—a loose woman. They claimed she was seen rolling in the hay with some village loafer in broad daylight, and there was even an incident where she seduced her future brother-in-law, got caught, and pretended to attempt suicide to avoid punishment.”
“Kay, the way they described it, it almost sounded convincing. If Scarlett didn’t have a bad reputation, those men wouldn’t have dared act so boldly.”
Leo’s voice was bitter. No wonder, when they had rescued Scarlett yesterday, those men had been so brazen, even suggesting Kay and Leo “join in the fun.” They had utterly written her off as a promiscuous woman and thought she was fair game.
Leo didn’t want to believe it, but judging by William’s dark expression, it seemed he had heard something similar.
Looking at Kay running around with Scarlett all morning, Leo felt conflicted. Unable to hold back, he finally said what was on his mind.
Scarlett was undeniably beautiful. Even knowing her reputation, Leo couldn’t deny her allure. But such a girl wasn’t suitable for Kay. If Kay, who had never been in a relationship before, fell for Scarlett, how would his family react? Leo wasn’t sure, but he knew one thing: they’d start by taking it out on him as the one who knew the truth.
Kay silently finished his cigarette. Leo, thinking Kay had been fooled by a so-called loose woman, fully expected him to explode in anger. To his surprise, Kay flicked the cigarette b**t away and smiled instead of getting mad.
“Leo, tell me—do you think your brother is handsome?” Kay asked, his tone casual.
Leo nodded vigorously.
The girls back in the yard couldn’t stop chasing after Kay, no matter how many times he shrugged them off. Kay’s good looks were universally acknowledged.
“And would you say I’m rich?”
Leo nodded again, reflecting on the trip to the city. In just half a month, they’d made a fortune, and Kay was even planning to hand this lucrative business over to him because he didn’t want to continue. If that didn’t count as being rich, then everyone else must be dirt poor.
Kay exhaled the last puff of smoke. “I think I’m handsome and rich too. And I haven’t exactly hidden the fact that I’m interested in her. If she were really as bad as those scumbags claimed, wouldn’t she be falling over herself to catch a big fish like me?”
Yet Scarlett hadn’t tried to seduce him at all. On the contrary, she seemed completely indifferent to Kay’s advances.
“Huh?!” Leo’s jaw dropped.
Kay smirked. “From now on, treat her with respect. She’s going to be your sister-in-law one day.”
Not far off, Scarlett and William had finished their conversation and were walking over, Scarlett looking deep in thought. Leo’s expression transformed into something out of a dramatic theater performance.
It was clear to him now—what the foreigners called Cupid must have struck his brother Kay square in the heart with an arrow!
