A Betrayed Luna – Chapter 4

My Heart

My heart nearly ceases as I hear the door click open and my companion enters the room, a profound scowl on his face. I inhale deeply and straighten my posture.

Here starts the endeavour.

I suppress my feelings, rise to my feet, and provide my partner with the papers asserting my infertility.

“Simply read it,” I murmur, seeming to be wounded.

He knits his brows in apprehension and gazes at me with large blue eyes. “What is this, Laura?”

I desire to regurgitate in his visage for addressing me in such manner, however I suppress the nausea instead.

“It is a fertility assessment.” Rayna assessed my ovarian function and reserve a few days ago,” I murmur, avoiding his gaze.

He examines the papers, his expression becoming increasingly sombre.

“Are you infertile?””He enquires, perusing the pages again for verification.”

Prior to my response, a resounding roar emanates from his chest, prompting me to retreat swiftly, almost stumbling in the process. His breath is laboured, and his eyes blaze green with rage.

“Are you infertile?”

This is just the response I desired from him, however it equally terrifies me that his wolf is out.

I was confident that Cain, his wolf, would never harm me. However, I had previously believed the same about my husband, who ultimately betrayed me with my sister.

“Y-yes,” I stammer, my body tensing with trepidation as I gaze into his wolf-like emerald eyes.

Cain was notorious for possessing an almost uncontrollable rage, and our mate connection was the one factor that subdued him. Yet, as he looms over me with a threatening growl emanating from his chest, I question whether it will suffice to ensure my safety now.

His gaze shifts to my abdomen, prompting me to reflexively lay a hand upon it to safeguard my child.

A distressing notion arises in my thoughts. Might he perceive the life developing within me?

I retreat cautiously and exclaim upon colliding with a wall right behind me, my pulse racing rapidly.

“C-Cain,” I stammer, shutting my eyes firmly, too apprehensive to gaze at him. “I-I apologize,” I murmur, now recognising that this was a poor decision.

“You express remorse?” He chuckles, the impact of his fist puncturing the wall adjacent to my face prompting an outburst of tears. “You are utterly remorseful? Regret does not fulfil the requirement of bearing a child, Laura!” He growls. “What am I expected to do now, hmm?” He enquires, clutching my chin with such intensity that I anticipate a bruise by morning. “I require an heir. That was your sole duty as my Luna. Your only purpose to me!”

My heart fractures into many fragments.

Was I only a breeding vessel to him? What of our nocturnal walks under the moon? Our clandestine kisses in the corridor? Our fervent evenings of love that left me feeling as though I may ignite beneath him? Was none of it authentic?

I begin to respond, but a smack to the face renders me speechless, causing me to collapse into the floor. Clutching my abdomen, I beseech any deity that may exist for the safety of my child.

Cain had never struck me previously. Nor had Aldo, and as I gaze at the man I once referred to as my husband, a sense of resentment intensifies inside me.

I pretend to be injured while gazing at him, cradling my flushed face, although within I seethe with rage. I will remember this… and I shall never absolve him for it.

His azure eyes reappear, and Aldo strides to the closet, seizing a bag and haphazardly depositing my garments into.

“We are finished, Laura,” he snarls while gathering my belongings. “I expect you to leave within the next hour. I am indifferent to your destination or actions. Just vacate my residence!”

My heart is filled with relief. I am being liberated, and shortly my child and I will reside on the opposite coast, spending our lives apart from him.

His gaze becomes obscured as he crams my garments into the bag and throws it to me.

He must be telepathically communicating with the elders.

“The elders will arrive shortly to conduct the rejection ceremony,” he states while approaching the door. “The lawyer will also be present to present the divorce papers. I expect you to vacate the premises once we sign the documents, understood?”

“Yes, sir,” I respond with a moan, feigning injury by cradling my cheek.

He exits the room abruptly, forcefully closing the door behind him.

“We are fine,” I murmur to myself, encircling my arms around my abdomen. “We shall attain freedom.”

I gently touch my flat abdomen, yearning to sense my unborn puppy developing inside me. It is reassuring to know I will not face this journey alone, yet it is also daunting. It is just the two of us now.
