The Luna and Her Child – Chapter 22

Flavour

There are two leaderboards: one for women and another for men. I occupy my designated position and extend my limbs. I am positioned eleventh in queue, thus I will participate in the second heat. The initial heat commences at 10 o’clock. Upon preparation, four men and two women commence running at the sound of the whistle. Upon completion, we await the timekeepers to communicate the times and display them on the board.

I remove my jumper and place it atop my bag. Our group consists of three women and three men. Upon the sounding of the whistle, I sprint. I feel robust and swift. I surpassed all competitors in my heat, including the males. I am pleased about that. My recorded time is 11.03 seconds. My name occupies the top position in Women’s. It is not particularly impressive, as only five women have competed thus far.

Seven men have competed thus far, with the fastest recorded time for men being 12.68 seconds. Among these 12, I am the swiftest. The day commences favourably. I proceed to the wolf form races and encounter Elaine en route. “Greetings, you!”She exhibits a smirk directed towards me.

Greetings!I express my exasperation by rolling my eyes. I understand her behaviour is a result of the compromising situation in which she discovered me last night. I experience a pang of nostalgia when I recall the pleasure of being with my companion last night.

“I am attending the wolf-form race; will you join me?”“I enquire of her.” She assents, and we proceed to the location. Upon arrival, the queue is extensive. Approximately 80 individuals are ahead of us. She establishes a mental connection with me.

Was he of any significance?-

-Negative. Merely my companion. – I scowl. Her eyes widen and her jaw drops.

“Are you earnest?”“She enquires audibly.” I acquiesce, yet communicate with her telepathically.

-He trailed me to the hospital, and although I did not observe him, I heard him growl and slam the door upon his departure. He is clearly discontent with my decision to have a child, leaving me without anyone significant in my life. I shrug, suppressing the lump in my throat, and she embraces me.

“I sincerely apologise, Celine!””

“At least I now understand not to await his arrival,” I attempt to express optimistically, yet she perceives my pain.

After approximately one hour, we reach the front of the queue. They gesture for us to proceed to the women’s tents, and we enter the spacious tent, disrobe, and change.

Eight individuals are timing the 300-meter run for the wolf event. Elaine and I are in the same heat, positioned alongside two other women and four men. Upon the sounding of the whistle, I sprint. I sense the soil compressing beneath my paws, and I stand before all. Out of the corner of my eye, I perceive a wolf closing in on me, prompting me to exert maximum effort. I reach the finish line, closely followed by another male wolf. Elaine secured third place.

Upon exiting the tent after changing, we review the leaderboards. I am in first place among women with a time of 14.4 seconds. Elaine ranks as the fourth overall female competitor with a time of 15.7 seconds. I glance to my side and observe a sizable man gazing at the scoreboard.

“You are exceptionally swift,” he remarks with a smile.

“Thank you; likewise,” I respond with a smile.

“However, it is insufficiently rapid,” he remarks, prompting my smile to broaden.

“It is nearly 11 o’clock; let us observe the fights,” Elaine states, and I acquiesce.

Cohen’s Perspective

I awaken, and the clock indicates 8:45 AM. I did not fall asleep until quite late. I ran for several hours and hunted a bear. I required an outlet for my aggression. I continue to experience profound emotional distress and intense anger; however, I have resolved to embrace this reality. She has a family with this individual. I must maintain my distance from her. Why did she kiss me if she was involved with another person? It seemed as though we were magnets, making it exceedingly difficult to resist.

I must locate a Luna for my pack who is not my destined mate. She must be a formidable combatant, and I must find her likeable. I understand that I cannot remain with someone like Aniyah for the entirety of my life. Expletive! This situation would have been significantly simpler had she communicated her boundaries and refrained from allowing me to touch or kiss her. I continually contemplate her scent, her tactile sensation, and her flavour.
