The Luna and Her Child – Chapter 2

Dehydration

We proceed towards the forest, within our boundaries. We disrobe, neatly fold our garments, and subsequently relocate. When Norah transforms, she becomes a sizable, multi-hued grey and black wolf with obsidian eyes. My wolf is entirely black, and my blue eyes are even more vivid than in my human form.

Norah and I traverse the forest, the ground yielding beneath our paws, as the warm sunlight envelops us, creating a pleasant sensation. I am truly appreciative that she compelled me to undertake this. After running for approximately thirty minutes, Norah establishes a mental connection with me.

Celine, Gavin has just communicated with me telepathically; he has something of great significance to discuss. I must depart. Let us proceed; I shall accompany you home on foot. –

I intend to remain outside and extend my run for a bit longer. It is pleasurable to be outdoors. “Proceed, I will join you later,” I assure her.

Norah commences her return, and I proceed onwards. After a brief period, I recognise that I have arrived at the boundaries of the pack. As I am about to pivot, I perceive the distant sound of an infant weeping. The border guard cannot perceive it, yet he remains vigilant in his human guise.

Our auditory perception is significantly enhanced in wolf form. After enduring 10 minutes at the border listening to an infant wail as though devoid of comfort, I find it unbearable. I must ascertain the well-being of this child.

The guard informs me that he is prohibited from leaving his post and cannot accompany me. “I will proceed alone.” I will be brief,” I inform him.

Despite the recent events, it may appear irrational for me to desire to explore the forest beyond our borders alone; however, the notion of an innocent child being alone or injured supersedes all rational considerations.

The guard cautions, “You should not proceed alone.”

“I could communicate with the Alpha and request that he dispatch some warriors to accompany you,” he proposes.

“Negative.” Our group has just lost 25 members. Families continue to grieve; I am reluctant to jeopardise additional pack members, as this may be a ruse. I wish to undertake this independently. I cannot endure the guilt if someone is harmed due to my actions,” I articulate. This is the most robust I have felt since the demise of my parents.

I traverse our border and sprint towards the wailing infant. In my wolf form, I can run at maximum speed for approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Upon my arrival, I am somewhat astonished to discover that it is indeed a genuine infant. It was not merely a figment of my imagination, nor was it a deception.

A crying infant lies in a cardboard box beneath a shaded tree. The infant appears to be a neonate, no older than one week.

I transform into my human form and lift the infant. The infant quickly calms slightly. The unfortunate creature is drenched in perspiration. Despite being positioned beneath a shaded tree, the baby has been incessantly crying on this warm summer day for an indeterminate duration, known only to the Moon goddess.

The infant is clad in a white onesie, and I am uncertain of the child’s gender. There are no indications of any other individuals present, and I observe that the infant’s lips appear dehydrated. I surmise it is becoming dehydrated and famished.

I remain in my human form and briskly walk back to the pack boundary. Upon arriving at the border, the guard promptly removed his t-shirt for me to conceal my exposed body. I handed him the baby, slipped on his shirt, and promptly retrieved the baby.

I will contact my brother to inform him of the situation and request that he procure baby formula and nappies from another pack member, then meet me at the packhouse.

Upon my arrival at the packhouse, Brandon possessed the infant supplies I had requested. Despite the baby’s soiled and odorous nappy, I recognise that our primary concern is nourishing that small stomach.

This situation may be a matter of life or death. The infant is sucking on this bottle with such intensity that it is causing me emotional distress. I prefer not to contemplate the potential consequences had Norah not taken me for a run this morning.

I am grateful that I attended and did not dismiss it as mere imagination. Upon the completion of the baby’s feeding, I proceed to change the diaper. At that moment, I recognise that this small infant is a female.

My brother and I, accompanied by Alpha Eric Ross and Luna Selah Ross, proceed to the infirmary for her examination. The physician conducts several examinations, and the infant girl appears to be in good health, except for dehydration; therefore, she requires an oral rehydration solution between feedings.
