After spending half a day at school and having lunch at Maggie’s noodle stall, Whitaker Scarlett headed towards the Greenfield Guesthouse.
If she didn’t meet Kay today, she wouldn’t wait. She would simply go to Sablewick first.
From afar, Whitaker Scarlett saw the familiar truck and couldn’t help but smile.
Kay had been waiting for half a day. Several times, he almost ran directly to Wellwater village to find her, but Whitaker Scarlett might not be in the village. So he waited at the Greenfield Guesthouse, as agreed upon in the telegram.
Just as his patience was about to wear thin, Whitaker Scarlett finally appeared.
Kay gazed at her greedily, from head to toe. He loved everything about her!
“Scarlett!”
Kay strode towards her. In public, he couldn’t embrace her tightly.
“You finally came.”
Whitaker Scarlett smiled at Kay. She didn’t know if she liked him, but he was pleasing to the eye. Compared to other men of her age around her, no one was as likable as Kay. He was open and honest, unapologetically enthusiastic, a little rebellious, but not sleazy—a fresh-faced young man… With such an enthusiastic young man showing his affection, Whitaker Scarlett found it hard to dislike him.
“Brother kay, have you been here long?”
Kay shook his head. “Just arrived a while ago.”
Leo, returning with their lunch, overheard this and was impressed by kay’s ability to lie with a straight face.
Just arrived a while ago?
He had clearly been waiting for four or five hours, driving all night to Greenfield County. After arriving at the guesthouse, he didn’t even go to his room to rest, instead choosing to stay in the car, afraid of missing Whitaker Scarlett’s arrival!
“Sister-in-law Scarlett, I brought lunch. Let’s eat together?”
Leo directly addressed her as “sister-in-law,” causing Whitaker Scarlett to glare at him, though her soft gaze lacked any real power.
“You haven’t eaten yet? Let’s eat first. I already had mine before coming.”
Kay thought, Leo was so clueless. How could he have any appetite for food at this moment? But when the lunchbox was opened and the aroma of the food wafted into his nostrils, Kay also felt his stomach rumbling. They used a tea table on the first floor of the guesthouse as a dining table. Kay ate while looking up at Whitaker Scarlett. Looking at the person he liked, even the food Leo casually bought tasted better!
After they finished eating, Whitaker Scarlett explained her plans:
“I’ll go to the train station to buy a ticket to Sablewick later. If I hadn’t received your telegram, I might have left two days ago. Are you guys just passing through Greenfield this time?”
Intentionally waiting for two days, ensuring Kay wasn’t disappointed, was already a significant show of consideration for him.
It wasn’t appropriate for her to stay in Greenfield County and play the role of a gracious host.
Kay paused, then smiled again. “Going to Sablewick to buy goods?”
He had planned to stay in Greenfield County for two days before heading south, but Whitaker Scarlett didn’t have the time. A brief meeting was hardly enough to satisfy Kay’s longing. He was certainly a possessive man, but not stupid… It wasn’t the right time to express his possessiveness. Kay sensed Whitaker Scarlett’s seriousness. She looked delicate and fragile, making one want to protect her, but she was actually very decisive.
Especially when it came to doing business, Kay didn’t think his importance in Whitaker Scarlett’s heart would outweigh her work.
At least, not yet.
Kay’s judgment was correct!
Leo opened his mouth to say something, but Whitaker Scarlett ignored him. Kay’s attitude pleased her, and she felt comfortable interacting with him:
“Yes, I want to go to Sablewick to buy some women’s clothing to sell.”
When she said this, there was no arrogance or boasting, yet she radiated a certain brilliance.
Leo thought, the woman Kay liked was really something. Not long ago, she was selling eggs, then she resold eels, and now she was even bolder, planning to go south to Sablewick alone to buy goods—how much profit could those small businesses bring? Leo couldn’t understand. Couldn’t Whitaker Scarlett see how much Kay liked her? If she just asked, Kay would even give away their entire truckload of goods!
The value of that truckload of goods would take Whitaker Scarlett a long time to earn on her own.
With a true money-making opportunity right in front of her, Whitaker Scarlett refused to seize it, which Leo found incredibly admirable.
What Leo thought of, Kay naturally understood.
Kay had already expressed his unwillingness to see Whitaker Scarlett work so hard. But Whitaker Scarlett clearly enjoyed it. He liked that she had backbone, and Kay felt both heartache and admiration. Initial attraction was merely infatuation with appearance, but lasting love, regardless of gender, stemmed from the other person’s admirable qualities.
