Whitaker Scarlett’s attitude was sincere, “I’m used to studying at home. The school environment will make me feel pressured. I couldn’t understand anything in junior high, but I found a way to learn by studying at home slowly. Teacher, could you allow me to attend school only for exams, or once a week to clarify any questions I have during self-study?”
If Whitaker Scarlett said she was running a business and wouldn’t go to school, not only the two teachers, but even her uncle William wouldn’t agree.
But since she said she was suited to self-study, the two teachers weren’t sure, and William was doubtful.
Whitaker Scarlett’s junior high school grades were indeed average.
If she had been a good student, she would have gone to vocational school, and wouldn’t have stopped studying after junior high.
Three years after graduating from junior high, Whitaker Scarlett could still score 446 points on the County East High School exam. It’s impossible that she could achieve this after just two days of studying at home, right? It must be the result of self-study. William didn’t dare ask in detail in front of the two teachers, but he suspected it had something to do with Walter Janson, the educated youth from Larkspur Village.
Walter Janson also got into university, and Whitaker Scarlett had been with him before. Perhaps they studied together.
But could William say this?
Saying it would involve the triangular relationship between Whitaker Rosalie, Walter Janson, and Whitaker Scarlett. Whitaker Scarlett lost to Whitaker Rosalie in the emotional entanglement, and the big loser bore the reputation of seducing her future brother-in-law. How could he say this in front of the teachers of County East High School!
Whitaker Scarlett’s request put George in a difficult position.
But Whitaker Scarlett was firm. If County East High School didn’t agree, she wouldn’t mind enrolling in County West High School.
George couldn’t let a promising student go to County West High School. He could only say he would discuss it with the school leaders.
As long as it could be discussed, Whitaker Scarlett knew it would likely work out. She parted ways with the two teachers in Greenfield County. Teacher Sophie was not very satisfied with William.
Self-study was an excuse. Teacher Sophie felt Whitaker Scarlett was worried about her family’s financial situation.
Having backbone is a good thing, but this girl has too much backbone… The uncle should have been more firm and not let Whitaker Scarlett ruin her future.
“Teacher still suggests you attend school regularly.”
“Thank you, Teacher Sophie, but I’ve already made up my mind.”
Needless to say.
She was taking the university entrance exam to prove herself and expand her network.
In another twenty or thirty years, the university students of the 1980s would occupy important positions in various industries and government departments. Whitaker Scarlett knew that the connections she made by going to university now would be very useful in the future. One cannot fight alone in life.
Of course, going to university is important, but Whitaker Scarlett also considered the present.
Getting rid of poverty and becoming wealthy, solving survival problems, was Whitaker Scarlett’s primary goal.
“She can really go to university…”
William was smiling foolishly all the way.
He had forgotten that Whitaker Scarlett’s surname was actually “Whitaker,” because he considered Whitaker Scarlett as his own family. His joy was that the Miller Family would have a university student, bringing glory to their ancestors!
He agreed with the teachers that Scarlett should attend school regularly. Some people study for two or three years and still fail the exam. Whitaker Scarlett’s test scores were good, but she shouldn’t be arrogant. She should attend school regularly, focus on her studies, and strive to get into a good university next year!
William didn’t say much. He would wait for Elizabeth and Amanda to return and put pressure on Whitaker Scarlett together.
…
“Really?!”
Elizabeth and Amanda collected eels by going from house to house. Whitaker Scarlett had taken their bicycle, so they had to walk.
It was incredibly tiring after a day’s work, but hearing the good news when they got home, Elizabeth was stunned with joy.
It was true. The teachers from County East High School came personally to inform them that Whitaker Scarlett had not only passed the school’s transfer exam, but also had a high chance of getting into university next year.
“Go to school, study hard, Mom will support you…”
These were the only words Elizabeth kept repeating.
Illogical and ungrammatical, she was clearly overjoyed.
Elizabeth felt like she was dreaming. Before, her daughter had attempted suicide, and they were penniless and driven out of the Whitaker family. Whitaker Scarlett seemed to have matured overnight. Their lives didn’t get worse, but better! They successfully divorced, moved out, Whitaker Scarlett made money from her business, these positive changes accumulated… until today, the good news from County East High School, Whitaker Scarlett not only had the chance to go to university, but a very high chance!
