These weren’t major issues.
Whitaker Scarlett felt she should explain herself properly. For the sake of the 50 pounds of eels delivered to the Yellow River Hotel every other day, she couldn’t bear this false accusation.
“Auntie, I think you’ve misunderstood. I haven’t thought about finding a partner yet. I’ll stop delivering eels in November.”
Parker Jace’s mother didn’t believe her.
She thought Whitaker Scarlett was playing hard to get.
“Let’s say Auntie got it wrong, but about the job, Scarlett, aren’t you going to listen to me?”
Delivering eels until November, allowing them to continue their interactions… wouldn’t that make Parker Jace fall hopelessly in love with her? Parker Jace’s mother wanted to separate Whitaker Scarlett from her son. Even a waitress job seemed inappropriate; she needed a grueling job to wear her down, leaving her no energy to seduce her son!
Parker Jace’s mother maintained a superior attitude, waiting for Whitaker Scarlett to beg her.
Whitaker Scarlett thought, I’m magnanimous, I won’t hold a grudge.
She reassured herself while responding with a slightly unfriendly tone. scarlett, after all, wasn’t a meek and pitiful person.
“Auntie, thank you for your kindness, but I haven’t thought about finding a job. A few dozen Dollars a month isn’t enough… Oh, that came out wrong. I’m not saying the job you offered is bad, I really plan to go to university.”
Whitaker Scarlett would only sell eels until November.
She cared about the Yellow River Hotel’s purchasing volume, but if someone tried to use this to control her, Whitaker Scarlett wasn’t afraid.
Were there no other hotels in HarborfieldCity?
She could sell off her remaining stock; she had a few hundred Dollars, enough to start another business.
Starting a business from scratch was incredibly difficult, but now Whitaker Scarlett had some capital and wasn’t afraid to start over.
Parker Jace’s mother was speechless after Whitaker Scarlett’s firm response.
She felt a tightness in her chest, suffocating discomfort.
Whitaker Scarlett wasn’t the type to swallow her anger. She didn’t use foul language, but she never let insults go unanswered—she retaliated immediately. Parker Jace’s mother wanted to scold her for being shameless, but what could she say? She couldn’t possibly find Whitaker Scarlett a good job to prove her point, could she?
Not to mention whether Parker Jace’s mother could even find a job, even if she could, why would she do it for Whitaker Scarlett?
And using “going to university” as an excuse, flattering herself?
Was university that easy to get into? Countless students fought tooth and nail every year.
If Parker Jace could go to university, why would he be a small purchaser at the Yellow River Hotel?
Parker Jace carried the eels to the kitchen with his men, then slowly came out. Seeing Whitaker Scarlett smiling, he thought they had settled the job matter.
“Scarlett, I didn’t mean anything by it, I didn’t think being self-employed was shameful, I just wanted to help you.”
Parker Jace’s mother was about to explode; her son was so clueless!
Just as she was about to erupt, someone greeted Whitaker Scarlett from afar:
“Scarlett, you’re here!”
William panted, exhausted from his journey with his men to HarborfieldCity. They had finally found Whitaker Scarlett at the Yellow River Hotel.
“Uncle! Why are you here…?”
George left his bicycle aside and squeezed in to introduce himself:
“You’re Whitaker Scarlett, right? You passed the supplementary exam for County East High School!”
Whitaker Scarlett was prepared, not particularly surprised, though naturally pleased.
George introduced himself and then introduced Teacher Sophie. Carson was a repeat student, and the teachers didn’t want to keep him too long, so they didn’t ask him to come to HarborfieldCity.
Parker Jace and his mother exchanged glances. Parker Jace’s mother didn’t understand. She didn’t think Whitaker Scarlett could really get into university. This girl didn’t look like someone who focused on studying. With a face like that, she’d have too many boys fawning over her, distracting her from her studies. How could she possibly get into university?
“Which County East High School?”
George, elated, casually replied, “Greenfield County East High School!”
Parker Jace’s mother scoffed, watching these people act so smug. She knew Greenfield County; it wasn’t even a county under HarborfieldCity’s jurisdiction.
Provincial city people inevitably had a superior attitude. Parker Jace’s mother already disliked Whitaker Scarlett, so her words were a bit offensive: “Greenfield County East High School? Does your school even have anyone who can get into university? A small-town school, it’s just…”
George thought this woman was Whitaker Scarlett’s relative, an elder perhaps, concerned about her child’s future, so he didn’t mind her bad attitude.
